What is the WhatsApp Business API? A practical guide for growing businesses
Many businesses start using WhatsApp with the free WhatsApp Business app on a single phone. It is a good way to begin, but as conversations grow, teams quickly need more: several people working on one number, automation, integrations and reporting. That is what the WhatsApp Business API, part of Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform, is designed for.
WhatsApp Business app vs. WhatsApp Business API
The WhatsApp Business app is built for small businesses managing conversations by hand. The API is built for businesses that want to communicate at scale through software such as WHAMAA.
- Team access: the app supports a limited number of linked devices; the API supports many agents on one number through a platform.
- Automation: the API supports chatbots, workflows and automated notifications.
- Integrations: the API connects to stores, CRMs and internal systems.
- Templates: the API lets you start conversations with approved message templates.
- Reporting: platforms built on the API can report on delivery, reads, replies and team performance.
What you need to get started
- A Meta Business account for your company.
- A phone number that can receive a verification code by SMS or call.
- Your business details, such as your website and display name, which Meta reviews.
- A provider platform, such as WHAMAA, to connect and manage the account.
Depending on your volume and use case, Meta may also ask you to complete business verification. Your provider can guide you through each step.
How conversations work: the 24-hour window and templates
When a customer messages your business, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Within that window, you can reply freely. Outside it, you need an approved message template to start the conversation again.
Templates fall into three categories: marketing (offers and announcements), utility (updates about an order, booking or account) and authentication (one-time passcodes). Each template is reviewed by Meta before you can use it.
How pricing works
There are usually two costs. Your platform subscription covers the software your team uses. Separately, Meta charges for template messages, with rates that depend on the template category and the recipient’s country. Meta updates its pricing from time to time, so ask your provider for the current rates for the countries you message.
Opt-in and quality
Businesses must have customers’ permission before messaging them on WhatsApp. Meta also monitors how customers respond to your messages. If many people block or report you, your quality rating can fall and your messaging limits can be reduced. Relevant, expected messages keep your number healthy.
Where to start
Pick one high-value use case, such as answering enquiries faster, sending order updates or following up with leads. Launch it, measure the results and expand from there.
